VanLUG Meetup - The place for Meeting news and RSVPs

During 2011 VanLUG began using a new medium to announce upcoming meetings: VanLUG Meetup.

Please visit us at http://www.meetup.com/VanLUG-BC/ where you can check out all upcoming VanLUG meetings and events. While there you also can introduce yourself and get acquainted with other VanLUG members.

VanLUG Meetup is also a site where you can indicate your interest and intentions regarding the assorted meetings and events. Your RSVP (yea or nay) there will help us ensure venues are adequate.

VanLUG Mailing Lists / News Groups

VanLUG runs several mailing lists, all of which are open to the general public. Most of these mailing lists are also reproduced as news groups at news.gweep.ca

  • VanLUG - General
The general mailing list. This is a relatively high volume list intended for the discussion of Linux, Free / Open Source Software, and VanLUG. Please keep posts on-topic.
  • VanLUG - Announce
This is a low traffic mailing list reserved for announcing VanLUG meetings and events.
  • VanLUG - Offtopic
This list is for off topic posts that, while not directly related to the general mailing lists's topics, are still likely to be of interest to VanLUG members. This is also a good place to post "for sale/giveaway" type posts.
  • VanLUG - Steering Group
The VanLUG Steering Group list. Discussions regarding ongoing VanLUG organizational topics.

Sever Connections: Concerns About Your Technical Decisions On The Cloud And Elsewhere

Date:
16 January 2012 - 7:30pm - 9:30pm
Location:
TBA
Speaker(s):
Ricard Pitt

Hi folks,

Late notice again regards our January meeting. Sorry this months been difficult. Speakers are unavailable and SFU intends to use our regular meeting room for another function. So please note the CHANGE IN LOCATION.

Our speaker will be Ricard Pitt, a senior statesman in the Vancouver IT community. It's been said that Richard has been running servers forever, and was the original sysadmin for the Garden of Eden.

Richard's topic will be "Server Connections: Concerns About Your Technical Decisions On The Cloud And Elsewhere". This lecture grows out of Richard's blog entry "Perspective on Remote Access To Your Documents Today": http://digital-rag.com/article.php/RemoteAccessToYourDataToday
and has been updated with additional links. So if you'd like to read ahead and come prepared feel free.

This is a lecture, but we'd like to have lots of Q&A and discussion. As people are moving to the cloud a whole new set of decisions and consequences are emerging, many of them beyond their control. You need to be prepared. Bring your questions.
