VanLUG - Monday, 19 April 2010

Vancouver Linux Users Group

Mon, 19 April 2010 7:30 - 9:00 pm
BCIT, SA Conference Room

There are a few things that we should talk about before the AGM in
May. Everyone who cares about the future of VanLUG should attend this
meeting and join in the discussion.

1. Probably not first in importance but on the top of my mind is that
we need someone to take over as Chair of VanLUG. I've been Chair for
two terms, given it my best shot, and it's time to give the position
to someone else.

2. The attendance at the monthly meetings has not been great. We get a
speaker as distinguished as Bruce Byfield to come to the group, and
six people show up. That's tragic. Although Bruce was very good about it.

From what I'm being told the face-to-face meetings are much less
important that they used to be, although the email list is still
important. Shall we stop the monthly meetings completely, hold them
only on special occasions, change the format and contents of the
meetings to something more relevant? We need an open and frank
discussion about this.

3. Paid memberships. Usually the people with paid memberships vote at
the AGM. Due to circumstances we haven't sold a single membership for
2010. What can we do according to the VanLUG charter, or what should
we do? Everybody get a vote at the AGM? Sell memberships at the AGM?
Refund the $10 after the AGM? This should be decided before the AGM.

That's it for now. See you on the 19th.

VanLUG Chair

Meeting Location

Where will the meeting be held? How apart from the website has the group been publicizing itself? Have TV news ever reported on the group, what Linux is and where/when the group meets? Are the meetings listed in the weekly calendars of local Vancouver community newspapers or the Georgia Straight?

Map

I can't find your meeting place

Has it ever occurred to anyone that your low attendance might be in your location? BCIT, SA Conference Room? Where's that? Yes, I know where BCIT has its Burnaby campus, but that's about it. At the very least, put a detailed map and directions, including parking, on this web site.

I probably won't be there tonight because I simply can't find this SA Conference Room.

Good map

I think the location building is the STUDENT ASSOCIATION building listed on the map as SE2. The map lists no "SA" building.

Unable to attend

I am unable to attend tonight due to illness, but I do want to express that I am interested in attending future events and wish to be added to the mailing list.
