Open Source as a Method for Progressive Social Change

Collaborative knowledge production characteristic of open source
software communities holds the potential for a progressive social
change. Open source as a method of knowledge production challenges
modern copyright and intellectual property regimes. It also contests
the underlying assumption that information can be commoditized like
any other good in a market-based economy
About our speaker:
Kate Milberry is a doctoral candidate in the School of Communication.
Her research examines the democratization of technology as a tool and
technique for progressive social change. Her current work focuses on
the relationship between social movements and the Internet, in
particular, how tech activists use and develop free software to
achieve broader goals of democracy, social and economic justice,
equality and environmental sustainability. Kate has an MA in
Communication and Social Justice from the University of Windsor.
