Assistive Technology in Linux
Alex Jurgensen
Accessibility is one of the biggest and hottest topics on the minds of
small developers. The realm of accessibility exposes a market eager to
get away from the chains of assistive technology venders that charge
high prices and offer very little in terms of return for investments.
Companies such as Apple have led the way to freedom in the past few
years. During this time a movement has begun to bring accessibility to
main stream projects. In a little more than four months since iPhone
had accessibility added, developers have been teaming with delight to
serve the newest edition of their customer base. Likewise, OSS
projects such as Loadstone and Webkit are bringing greater
accessibility to all. We will look at how Linux fits into the picture,
as well as how you as developers/service operators can begin offering
accessibility to your users. There are benefits to adding
accessibility to your projects and we will explore some of them.
Presenter Alex Jurgensen is a visually impaired student from Surrey
British Columbia. He works part time, filling the role of
accessibility consultant at Simon Fraser University. In addition, he
is a current member of the VIPBC.org staff, where he works as a
technology trainer and server administrator.
